Share-VDE 2.0 – A Practical Application of Linked Open Data -

Share-VDE 2.0 is a linked data management system and entity discovery platform for the library, archive, and museum collections domain. This pioneering and practical environment that uses linked data to connect and present authoritative data from a growing network of libraries was launched recently. Share-VDE 2.0 aims to facilitate the exchange, reuse of bibliographic data and increase visibility and access to knowledge.

Initially undertaken as a research and development project, Share-VDE has evolved to become a natural and effective pilot environment influenced by the vision of the Linked Data for Production (LD4P) initiatives. It enriches, reconciles, clusters, and converts the authority and bibliographic MARC data of participant libraries into a dynamic, discoverable format. Thereby, Share-VDE provides libraries with a reliable and up-to-date data source complete with a set of advanced tools and services that facilitate interoperability with the IFLA Library Reference Model.

Share-VDE 2.0 is the result of ongoing co-operation and valuable contributions of colleagues from founding and member institutions across the international library community. It demonstrates the power of collaboration among libraries, opening the door to a flexible, sustainable, and cooperative approach to library data in an emerging bibliographic ecosystem. Furthermore, Share-VDE 2.0 acts as an authoritative, interoperable BIBFRAME node to exchange data and discover knowledge.
