There is an increase in the number of people dangling their legs over the train platform edge in Britain. The Sitting on the Platform Edge (SOPE) Steering Group was set up by the Stations Working Group last year to address this risky activity. The group has proposed that new terminology should be used to describe and improve the gathering and analysis of data on this risk.
A survey found that the operating companies and others use several terms to describe the dangerous activity of people dangling their legs over the train platform edge. SOPE is intended to bring about consistency in reporting and improving the gathering and analysis of data on this activity across the industry.
SOPE is already in use by Scotrail, which has established a mature reporting system. Therefore, the SOPE Steering Group, the Stations Working Group, its parent group, the PTSRG, and the governance group, the System Safety Risk Group, agree and have endorsed the term. SOPE has also become its own reportable event, which is another significant development because it was thought that this activity had been underreported due to it not being its own reportable event. Direction is now being sought on how to embed the use of SOPE in the industry.
