Sustainability Standard for Hydropower Projects Launched -

The Hydropower Sustainability Standard was launched on September 8, 2021, at the International Hydropower Association's World Hydropower Congress. It offers a credible, transparent certification scheme that will help to ensure that hydropower projects are recognized and certified for their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance.

The certification scheme was developed by a coalition of industry, governments, multilateral and financial institutions, and civil society organizations. The aim was to build a Hydropower Sustainability Standard that would build trust and promote transparency in the hydropower sector.

The Hydropower Sustainability Standard will give communities, governments, and investors greater confidence about the net benefits of hydropower projects and how impacts on the local environment are mitigated. Moreover, it will address any confusion about the sustainability of a new hydropower project and help to unlock green investment and licensing decisions.
