The Importance of Putting Metadata at the Heart of Work -

The Data Standards Authority's mission, which is part of the Office of National Statistics' (ONS), ensures it is simple and easy to use and share data across government. A substantial share of the work involves making metadata accessible. The digital transformation it had undertaken taught the Data Standards Authority many lessons on making data accessible with metadata.

One of the learnings was that to unlock the full value of data; it is critical to put metadata at the center of work. Similarly, structural and administrative metadata lineage in the catalog and business glossary are essential tools in supporting conversations and understanding data across organizational domains.

The digital transformation taught the Data Standards Authority the necessity of understanding how it should approach managing and curating its catalog and glossary. Rushing headlong without first deciding on an approach would result in the organization acquiring an expensive tool and failing to complete its metadata initiative.

The process brought out the importance of concentrating on usability because it could germinate questions such as does your search return too many false positives. The feedback for usability questions would help improve the understanding of the interoperability of systems and consequently help simplify the process of discovering and collecting metadata.

Above all, a fundamental aspect of making data accessible is to ensure everybody in the organization recognizes and supports the need to collect and manage metadata.
