The Society of Motion and Television Engineers Publishes Language Metadata Table Standard -

The Society of Motion and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the leading standards governing body for media and entertainment engineering, announced that it has co-developed the Language Metadata Table (LMT) standard with the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance (MESA), a leading community of media technology executives. The LMT is the first-ever system of standardized language codes embraced by the Media & Entertainment Industry.

This is the first project that SMPTE has undertaken to electronically publish machine-readable metadata as a standard. It is expected the standard will be used operationally and it will streamline media asset management around the globe. LMT is based on the IETF BCP 47 (Internet Engineering Task Force Best Common Practices) guidelines. It will benefit media companies, content owners, video service providers, and others who need standardized distinctions between spoken and written language and consistent codes.

The overarching intent behind developing LMT is to provide a controlled vocabulary for what is needed in the professional media industry. The codes can be implemented for a plethora of content-oriented applications, accessibility for the visually and hearing impaired, licensing and localizing international and distributing non-English content.

The MESA-organized LMT workgroup committee of data experts is helping to share and expand the standards table, having created universally accepted language terms, definitions, examples, and templates for over 200 language codes and display values, with more in development. The workgroup will continue to further define and document its policies and procedures, update other languages, and partner with organizations to strengthen LMT and support broader adoption.
