Media Entertainment Services Alliance (MESA) introduced smart content – the concept of connecting all the data surrounding content – as a concept in 2014. Since then, several projects around the industry have exemplified the value of this idea. However, some of the highly successful projects had to abstain from the traditional approach and embrace an innovative method for managing diverse and disparate data. Matt Turner, CTO, Media and Manufacturing of MarkLogic, details the new approach.
The traditional approach of bringing together multiple sources of data from the content and then linking the data is a good fit for applications that focus on a single type of data or a single use data. However, this approach does not seem to work well when data from multiple sources must be brought together and made available.
If the goal of a project is to deliver the value of the data around the content, a new approach for managing diverse and disparate data must be taken. Therefore, NoSQL and semantic data models (instead of traditional relational databases) are used to bring the data together. Additionally, an architecture pattern called the Operational Data Hub (ODH) is leveraged to put data into action and fulfill the promise of smart content.
