Workforce Advancement through the Development of Privacy Risk Management Workforce Taxonomy -

Identification of recognized roles is critical for the development of a skilled and knowledgeable privacy workforce because they are important for conducting an effective privacy program. A prerequisite for this is to develop a standardized method for classifying job titles and skills.

A recent effort between the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Privacy Engineering Program have kicked off a privacy workforce taxonomy initiative. The initiative is an essential starting point for an accurate definition of the privacy workforce and their work and contribution to managing privacy risks.

The proposed privacy workforce taxonomy will be aligned with the NIST Privacy Framework and the Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity (NICE Framework), to provide a standard language around roles, tasks, knowledge, and skills.

NIST’s approach to privacy and cybersecurity is to recognize both the disciplines as separate entities as well as their overlap. The goal, then, is to build resources that organizations can use in a modular fashion to address their workforce needs for privacy and cybersecurity.

Privacy professionals and those in legal, tech, security, data science, engineering, product development, human resources, design, and marketing disciplines should consider the Privacy Workforce Taxonomy Program as an opportunity to collaborate with the IAPP and NIST by providing feedback and following the initiative.
