The Governance Turn: How AI Disclosure Is Redefining Editorial Risk

AI disclosure in scholarly publishing is still evolving, yet its next phase is already coming into view. Beyond transparency and emerging classification frameworks, structured disclosure is likely to function increasingly as a practical risk signal within publishing operations. Different types of AI use carry different implications for editorial scrutiny, peer review, and production validation. When captured in structured formats and embedded in workflows, disclosure data can enable proportional oversight, informed routing decisions, and stronger governance. It also positions publishers to respond to rising expectations from funders, institutions, and regulators around responsible AI use. Framed as a horizon scan, this discussion explores how AI disclosure may transition from policy statement to operational control, strengthening audit readiness, consistency, and long-term resilience in an AI-enabled research ecosystem.
