Research and learning solutions provider HealthStream, Inc., US, has announced a partnership with Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health. Under the deal, HealthStream will offer Lippincott's Nursing Procedures and Skills, an online point-of-care support tool, to the nearly 1,900 hospital customers of its learning products and services. It is expected that, for the first time, healthcare providers will have the additional option of utilising Lippincott's Nursing Procedures and Skills in a convenient courseware format through HealthStream's learning platform, the HealthStream Learning Center (HLC). The new format is fully integrated in HLC, enabling the assignment of procedures and skills as learning activities, assessment of knowledge gained, and the tracking and reporting of all learning completed by healthcare professionals within an organisation.
Lippincott's Nursing Procedures and Skills includes over 900 procedures for nurses formulated on recent evidence-based standards of patient care. Each of these procedures can now be offered as a course through HealthStream's learning platform, which includes an assessment that is required to complete the course. Delivered as courses, this content can be utilised by healthcare organisations as a component of their competency evaluation process that is required by the US' Joint Commission.
Establishing an effective competency assessment programme is seen as essential to providing quality care as well as meeting standards of regulatory bodies. In recent years, the Joint Commission has replaced hospital standards exclusively focused on capabilities with standards focused on the actual performance of the clinical functions and processes that most significantly affect patient care. A primary area of that focus is to ensure that hospitals determine the qualifications and demonstrate the competencies for all staff positions.
