N.Y. consortium selects Bibliotheca, Inc. to provide RFID solutions for libraries -

Library solutions provider Bibliotheca, Inc., Switzerland, has announced that it has been selected by the Automated Library Information System (ALIS) of Nassau County, N.Y., to provide a range of RFID library solutions for the 54 independent public libraries that comprise ALIS. ALIS is a consortium of 54 autonomous public libraries serving communities in Nassau County, N.Y.

Bibliotheca has been selected to provide RFID hardware, tags and services to upgrade ALIS libraries' facilities and support staff. The goal of ALIS and its member libraries is to improve the patron experience through more effective customer services, enhance inventory management and improve security of collections.

In May 2010, ALIS made an initial investment in RFID conversion stations, along with 1 million RFID book tags, which will be provided to six libraries taking part in the consortium's RFID pilot installations. Tagging of collections is scheduled to begin in August 2010. Pilot sites will install Bibliotheca patron self-service stations, staff stations and security gates in the fourth quarter of 2010, with these sites fully transitioned to the new Bibliotheca systems during the first quarter of 2011. Upon completion of the pilot installations, other ALIS libraries will be positioned to move forward with their own Bibliotheca RFID implementations under the ALIS contract, without having to undertake their own individual RFP projects.
