Canadian universities group renews content pact with Elsevier SciVerse ScienceDirect -

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) has renewed its agreement for the Elsevier SciVerse ScienceDirect Freedom Collection for 2011-2014. The move is seen to provide university researchers and students across Canada with wide access to a vast collection of high-impact e-journals in multiple disciplines. Seventy-three of CRKN's 75 member institutions are participating in the agreement, including three institutions joining the licence for the first time.

Through this large-scale collaboration, university researchers, students and libraries are expected to enjoy advantageous access and terms through CRKN's model licence agreement with predictable pricing over the term of the agreement.

Canada's universities and libraries are seen to be facing serious economic pressures and constraints. This reportedly made it even more important for CRKN to secure the Elsevier content at the lowest cost nationwide. According to CRKN representatives, the 2011-2014 agreement maintains generous access, usage and content repurposing provisions for bona fide academic uses.

CRKN's Negotiations Resources Team reportedly obtained feedback from members on their requirements and priorities as the first step before confirming objectives with the board. Further, CRKN had a subset of its team in direct discussions with Elsevier who then engaged members systematically during the process.

A partnership of Canadian universities, CRKN seeks to expand digital content for the academic research enterprise in Canada.
