ORCID, Inc selects Semantico to build global scholarly author registry -

Online publishing services provider Semantico Ltd, UK, has been selected by ORCID, Inc. to help build the first phase of their worldwide registry for scholarly authors. ORCID is a not-for-profit global consortium of academic institutions, publishers, scholarly societies, corporate companies, governmental bodies and not-for-profit agencies.

For the scholarly research community the issue of name ambiguity and attribution is a persistent and critical problem. Cultural differences, inconsistent use of name abbreviations, name changes due to marriage, different writing systems and individuals with the same name, all make it difficult for electronic recognition. To solve this, over 275 organisations from 40 different countries have come together to actively participate in and support ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID).

The ORCID initiative aims to establish an open, independent registry by assigning unique identifiers linkable to an individual's research output. The system will also enhance the scientific discovery process and improve the efficiency of research funding and collaboration within the research community.

Thomson Reuters has provided ORCID with a perpetual license and royalty free use of ResearcherID code and intellectual property, giving ORCID the critical technology to create its system.

Semantico has been appointed to build the ORCID software platform. The technical solution is a significant advancement on the existing ORCID alpha demonstration system based on ResearcherID code. It will use an API-driven service-oriented architecture, and is being developed using an agile, iterative process.

The ORCID software platform will be released as Open Source software using an MIT license.
