JISC Collections, the membership organisation that supports the provision of digital content for education and research in the UK, has agreed to the terms of a license to renew access for the next five years to Elsevier's journal content, via SciVerse ScienceDirect platform. The vast majority of researchers at UK academic institutions will now have online access to all over 2,000 Elsevier journals. Furthermore, the agreement also offers institutions multiple access options, depending on their needs.
JISC Collections and Elsevier stressed a shared commitment to investing in information as a driver of research excellence and efficiency. JISC Collections has initiated a series of projects to serve researchers and academic libraries, including projects developing effective and sustainable business models for e-resources, studies examining the needs and behaviours of modern students and researchers, and projects exploring how innovative tools and technology can support efficient library procurement.
Similarly, Elsevier is working with the UK Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS), the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), and the 1994 Group on a series of initiatives to support the UK's goals of sustaining and advancing its leadership position in research.
