Oxford Journals, a division of Oxford University Press (OUP), has announced a new partnership to supply 206 journals to 6000 colleges in India. The deal was agreed with the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre, an autonomous inter-university centre of University Grants Commission. INFLIBNET was set up by the Indian government to create infrastructures for the sharing of library and information resources and services among Academic and Research Institutions.
OUP was selected to provide over 200 journals, which cover a range of subject areas such as medicine, history, law, economics, and politics, among others. The collection includes journals with high-quality Impact Factors such as the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Political Analysis, and the European Heart Journal.
In 2004, under the National Mission on Higher Education programme, INFLIBNET was asked to develop a consortium model for Indian universities, mainly for undergraduate programmes. Its aim was to facilitate and expand scope for quality research, investing in information technology. In 2005, OUP initiated a similar deal with INFLIBNET giving eighty-seven Indian universities access to 189 journals. The programme is being implemented in phases and INFLIBNET expects that within three years, 6000 colleges will have access to OUP’s journals.
