Wiley, ASCE Press to release handbook of professional practice for civil engineers -

Publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., US, has announced a co-branded agreement with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Press to publish Civil Engineer's Handbook of Professional Practice in May 2011.

Civil engineers need to build on their traditional strengths in technology and science with the mastery of the business of civil engineering, the "softer" skills of management, teamwork, ethics, leadership, communication, it has been observed. These skills have been defined as essential to the successful practice of civil engineering by the ASCE Body of Knowledge (BOK) Task Force. Civil Engineer's Handbook of Professional Practice takes the practical skills defined by the ASCE BOK and provides techniques, quotes, case examples, problems and information to assist the reader in addressing the challenges facing civil engineers in the real world.

Civil engineers are expected to experience 24 percent employment growth in the coming decade, faster than the average for all occupations. Fuelled by population growth and the related need to improve infrastructure, more civil engineers are needed to design and construct or expand transportation, water supply, and pollution control systems and buildings and building complexes. The Civil Engineer's Handbook of Professional Practice is projected as a complete guide for professional civil engineers as well as students. Coverage includes the 24 skills necessary for the practice of civil engineering and defined by the 2008 ASCE Body of Knowledge; students and practitioners of civil engineering with sound business management principles; proven methods for balancing speed, quality and price in a client-oriented profession; guidance on balancing career goals, life outside work, compensation and growth; hundreds of drawings, charts, and feature boxes; and a glossary and an instructor's guide to assist with in-class use and instruction.

The handbook is projected as a valuable resource for both academia and industry professionals. Used as a textbook for professional practice, senior project, infrastructure engineering and engineering project management courses, it is intended for junior, senior and graduate level students in the major. Additionally, the book is said to be a helpful reference for practicing civil engineers, covering everything from the challenge of sustainability to the rigours of problem recognition and solving.
