Non-profit scientific publisher Institute of Physics (IOP) Publishing, UK, has expanded its Shibboleth compliance to include the Japanese Federation GakuNin. Users in Japanese institutions who are members of GakuNin can now access subscribed content from multiple resources using just one ID and password, whether they are on- or off-campus.
Shibboleth, a project of Internet2, is a standards based, open source software package for web single sign-on across or within organisational boundaries. It allows sites to make informed authorisation decisions for individual access of protected online resources in a privacy-preserving manner.
IOP is already a member of several Shibboleth Federations worldwide. These include the UK Access Management Federation, French RENATER, Spanish RedIris, German Higher Education and Research and Portuguese RCTSaai.
Access to IOP's content via Athens and IP addresses continues to be available for institutions that are not Shibboleth compliant and for institutions that wish to continue authenticating their users with these methods.
