The editors and publisher of the Journal of Patient Safety, the journal of research and clinical practice in advancing patients safety, have announced a new affiliation with The Institute for Safety in Office-Based Surgery (ISOBS), an independent organisation dedicated to promoting patient safety in office-based surgery. The journal is published by Wolters Kluwer.
The ISOBS aims to promote patient safety in office-based surgery and to encourage collaboration, scholarship, and physician and patient education. The ISOBS has approximately 2,000 members from a wide range of fields.
As part of the new affiliation, the Journal of Patient Safety will add a section providing new research and insights on perioperative safety. For example, an early publication paper co-authored by Dr. Richard D. Urman, Executive Director and Co-Founder of ISOBS - based on the National Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry database and including more than 12 million procedures performed from 2010 to 2013 - finds that on anesthesia procedures performed in non operating-room settings actually have lower morbidity and mortality rates than OR procedures. But the findings highlight the need for special attention to potential safety problems in cardiology and radiology locations.
Dr. Urman will join the Editorial Board of the Journal of Patient Safety, contributing his expertise in the safety of office-based anesthesia, sedation, and surgery. Members of ISOBS will also be eligible to subscribe to the journal at special reduced rates.
The Journal of Patient Safety will continue to present new research and perspectives on every aspect of patient safety, highlighting the full scope of ideas and effective approaches to prevent medical errors and patient harms.
