Knowledge Unlatched partners with Scope to create MARC records -

Scope e-Knowledge Center (Scope), a leading provider of knowledge services and a Quatrro Global Services company, has announced its engagement with Knowledge Unlatched (KU), an Open Access facilitator headquartered in London. It is KU’s mission to support Open Access for scholarly books by working together with libraries and publishers. The objective of this engagement with Scope e-Knowledge is to create MARC records from input metadata available in XL spreadsheets, .mrc / .mrk and XML format files for the 78 new books Knowledge Unlatched hopes to ‘unlatch’ (make Open Access) in 2016. The titles to be unlatched by Knowledge Unlatched cover a broad range of subject areas comprising Anthropology, History, Literature, Media & Communications and Politics from 26 recognised scholarly publishers.

The input metadata provided by Knowledge Unlatched includes title level metadata for the input book titles. Conversion of title metadata to MARC21 format along with subject classification and description as per the custom requirement of Knowledge Unlatched requires deep subject matter expertise to map the input metadata with the MARC fields.

Scope has an experienced bibliographic/cataloging team comprising highly qualified library professionals and expertise in creating and updating MARC formats (AACR2 and RDA). Knowledge Unlatched chose Scope for creating MARC records from input files along with database codes provided for selected book titles and new publications. Scope employed its proprietary and highly customizable MARC platform, mARCat™, for this assignment.

Frances Pinter, Executive Director at Knowledge Unlatched, commented, “We are delighted to partner with Scope for this assignment. We are confident that Scope’s team will ensure the continued availability of customized, enriched, and highly granular MARC records we require to successfully meet the demands of our customers.”

Commenting on this partnership, Tram Venkatraman, President of Scope, said, “Scope has been offering MARC record services for e-books, journals and other technical publications of publishers, information aggregators and leading standards organizations. With robust technology-assisted processes and its team’s expertise, Scope is well positioned to provide MARC records for Knowledge Unlatched.”

Joseph Ranjan, Scope’s Senior Vice President of Data Services & Business Research, commented, “Creating librarian-friendly MARC records and enhanced metadata can improve discoverability. Scope is delighted to have the opportunity to partner with Knowledge Unlatched for creating MARC21 records.”
