ORCID has announced the recent formation of an ORCID Austria Consortium, which aims to increase the uptake and relevance of the ORCID iD as a unique identifier for researchers. The ORCID Austria Consortium is the result of several years of nationwide discussion, initiated by the Scientometrics Working Group of the University of Vienna in 2014, about the introduction of a person identifier in the Austrian scientific community.
The consortium has signed a two-year agreement with ORCID, and 11 member institutions have joined the consortium at its launch. It will be jointly led by consortia lead organisations, TU Wien (represented by the TU Wien Bibliothek) and the University of Vienna (represented by the Vienna University Library).
As consortia leads, the TU Wien and the University of Vienna will engage with the community to foster open research activities and best practices for research data management. Together, they will provide basic support for ORCID Austria Consortium members as they implement ORCID - with backup from the ORCID team as needed. The lead organisations are also developing a joint statement of principles for the ORCID Austria Consortium, as well as planning a series of outreach activities, including workshops, webinars, and an official launch event in June 2019.
