European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity renewed: Science Europe commends ALLEA's update -

Science Europe, the association of major European Research Funding and Performing Organizations, extends its congratulations to the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA) on the successful update of its European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. As a key contributor during the consultation process, Science Europe played a vital role in shaping these essential guidelines for integrity in research. The organization looks forward to future collaborations and discussions on this critical topic.

The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity is a pivotal reference document that provides comprehensive guidance for researchers and organizations in Europe and beyond. It offers a framework for self-regulation across all research settings, serving as a basis for local and national policies and practices related to research integrity, including collaboration, publishing, and communication.

In December 2022, Science Europe was invited to participate in the consultation process organized by ALLEA to provide valuable insights for the revised edition of the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. Science Europe's Task Force on Research Integrity took on the responsibility of contributing to this significant task.

On June 23, the new revised edition of the Code was officially published by ALLEA, and Science Europe expressed its satisfaction in witnessing much of its input being thoughtfully considered in this updated edition. The revised Code notably emphasizes the roles of research organizations in upholding high standards of ethics and integrity, placing a stronger emphasis on fostering a positive research culture.

Moreover, the updated edition encompasses a broader view of research outputs, explicitly recognizing science communication and public engagement activities. It employs more inclusive language, acknowledging the diverse roles and positions that contribute to modern research. Science Europe proudly acknowledges that these valuable updates were proposed during the consultation process, and it extends its gratitude to ALLEA for incorporating these suggestions.

The Science Europe Office anticipates ongoing discussions concerning this topic of central importance to the research cultures they operate within. The Science Europe Task Force on Research Integrity will continue to explore the specific role of Science Europe Member Organizations in supporting integrity and ethics, linking these efforts with other key priorities, including the ongoing research assessment reform initiative.

By ensuring research integrity remains at the forefront of research practices and policies, Science Europe and ALLEA collectively contribute to fostering an environment of trust, accountability, and excellence in the pursuit of scientific knowledge. The renewal of the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity represents a significant milestone in maintaining the highest standards of integrity in research across Europe and beyond.
