AIP Publishing, the American Physical Society, and IOP Publishing have announced the establishment of a ground-breaking coalition named Purpose-Led Publishing (PLP), with a steadfast commitment to prioritizing purpose over profit in scholarly communications.
Driven by their shared not-for-profit status, these three esteemed publishers pledge to reinvest all funds generated from publishing back into the research ecosystem. Their collective efforts extend support to the global physical science community through various initiatives, including educational training, mentorship programs, and awards and grants, all aimed at fostering accessibility and inclusivity in science.
As founding members of PLP, the publishers have outlined a set of industry standards that serve as the foundation for ethical and high-quality scholarly communications. These principles underscore PLP's promise to the scientific community, ensuring transparency, integrity, and accountability in their practices:
PLP's Commitments:
· Investment in Science: Dedicate 100% of funds back into scientific endeavors.
· Publication Integrity: Publish content that genuinely contributes to scientific knowledge.
· Reasonable Terms: Ensure fairness and reasonableness in contractual agreements.
· Research Integrity: Prioritize research integrity over profit motives.
· Accountability: Acknowledge errors and take corrective actions.
PLP's Pledges:
· Not-for-Profit Status: Maintain not-for-profit status to uphold the commitment to scientific advancement.
· Purpose Over Profit: Reject shareholder interests that prioritize profit above purpose.
Through close collaboration, PLP members will continue refining their policies, processes, and standards to serve the best interests of the scientific community. To stay updated on PLP's initiatives and activities, interested parties can visit www.purposeledpublishing.org.
