Webinar to address Ethics and Integrity in AI for research -

A webinar focused on the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research is set to take place, co-organized by the Coalition of the Advancement of Research Assessment (CoARA) Working Group on Ethics, Research Integrity, and Policy (ERIP), the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA), and the European Commission's Science Advice Mechanism (SAM).

This event will delve into pressing questions surrounding AI in research, including how to promote its ethical use, how AI can be leveraged to uphold fundamental scientific values, and how research practices can be evaluated within this evolving digital landscape.

This webinar draws on the recent advice adopted by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) at the request of Margrethe Vestager (Executive Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age) and Iliana Ivanova (Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth). The resulting two reports focus on the question ‘How can the European Commission accelerate a responsible uptake of Artificial Intelligence in science (including providing access to high-quality Al while respecting and promoting European research values) in order to boost innovation and prosperity, strengthen the EU’s position in science, and ultimately contribute to solving Europe’s societal challenges?’.

Additionally, the discussion will reference the revised European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (2023), which now includes guidelines addressing the ethical challenges posed by AI in research.

The webinar will feature leading European experts who will explore the potential and pitfalls of AI in research and communication. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions aimed at identifying new pathways to foster an ethical and innovative future for research and education in Europe.

Those interested in participating in this critical conversation are encouraged to register for the event. Further information and registration details can be found here.
