Creative Rights in AI Coalition urges government to safeguard copyright as AI policy evolves -

A newly formed Creative Rights in AI Coalition has called on the government to prioritize copyright protection as it shapes policies surrounding generative artificial intelligence (GAI). The coalition, which includes publishers, authors, artists, music businesses, unions, and photographers, is advocating for policies that support growth in both the creative and tech sectors while ensuring that human creativity is valued and protected in the age of AI. STM, the International Association of Scientific, Technical, and Medical Publishers, has joined the coalition, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the creative and technology industries.

As part of its campaign, the coalition has outlined three core principles for AI policy development. These include creating a dynamic licensing market with robust copyright protections, ensuring that content creators retain control and transparency over their works, and fostering growth and innovation across the creative and tech sectors. The coalition is urging policymakers to adopt these principles as a foundation for creating balanced AI regulations that protect intellectual property while supporting technological advancement.

The coalition's launch is accompanied by new polling data from Reset Tech and YouGov, which reveals strong public support for transparency and fair compensation in the development of AI technologies. According to the poll, 72% of respondents believe AI companies should pay royalties to creators whose text, audio, or video is used to train AI models. Additionally, 80% of respondents agree that AI companies should be required to disclose publicly the data sources used to develop their models. These findings highlight growing public concern about the ethical implications of AI and the importance of holding AI companies accountable.

The Creative Rights in AI Coalition is committed to working closely with the government, tech sector, and content creators to shape AI policies that protect copyright, ensure transparency, and enable fair compensation. With this initiative, the coalition aims to strike a balance between innovation and ethical standards, ensuring that the growth of AI technologies supports—not diminishes—the contributions of the creative industries.
