OpenAIRE, a leading European Open Science infrastructure, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LA Referencia and REDClara, Latin America’s federated network for open scholarly communication. This agreement builds on their decade-long collaboration, formalizing efforts to advance Open Science and enhance interoperability between Europe and Latin America.
For over ten years, LA Referencia has been a key player in OpenAIRE projects, integrating metadata standards and adopting technologies developed by OpenAIRE. The new MoU sets the stage for further joint technological innovations, improved interoperability standards, and expanded training opportunities for Open Science.
Under the MoU, the partners will focus on several key objectives:
• Advancing Open Science Infrastructure: Collaborating on technical advancements to enhance metadata aggregation and data exchange.
• Promoting Open Access: Improving the visibility and accessibility of scientific outputs in both regions.
• Aligning Policies: Integrating national Open Science policies and standardizing metadata practices.
• Training and Capacity Building: Sharing resources to boost Open Science literacy among researchers.
This partnership will expand the international visibility of over 5.5 million Open Access research results aggregated by LA Referencia from nearly 2,000 repositories. By combining efforts with OpenAIRE, the collaboration promises to offer more equitable global access to publicly funded research, benefiting researchers, institutions, and policymakers alike.
This MoU signifies an important step in fostering deeper cooperation and innovation in scholarly communication, advancing Open Science across borders.
