The Biochemical Society signs the Milan Declaration, highlighting the role of science in addressing global challenges -

The Biochemical Society has officially signed the Milan Declaration, joining five prominent scientific organizations in emphasizing the pivotal role of science in tackling the world’s most pressing challenges. The declaration was developed during the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) in Milan in June 2024.

The Milan Declaration underscores the critical importance of science and scientific research in providing coordinated, innovative solutions to global problems, including climate change, health crises, and sustainability issues. The declaration calls for unified action among scientists and citizens to harness the transformative potential of science to drive societal progress and contribute to building a more inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous world.

The aims of the declaration are threefold:

• To emphasize science’s essential role in addressing global challenges through ethical, inclusive, and unbiased collaboration.

• To unite scientists and citizens in using science’s power to foster societal progress and shape a sustainable future for all.

• To inspire greater investments in scientific research, advocate for the freedom of research and interdisciplinary innovation, and reaffirm core values such as peace, equity, and human dignity.

By signing the Milan Declaration, the Biochemical Society aligns itself with other distinguished signatories, including Honorary Members Sir Paul Nurse, Sir John Walker, and Sir Venki Ramakrishnan, as well as over 55 Nobel Prize laureates. This collective support highlights the broad commitment of the scientific community to advancing research and addressing global challenges through collaborative and ethical means.

The Biochemical Society encourages others in the scientific community to join in signing the Milan Declaration and further promote the values of science as a catalyst for positive change. For more information on the declaration and how to add your name, visit the Biochemical Society’s website.
