STM, an international trade association for academic and professional publishers, has submitted an amicus brief in the Kadrey v. Meta lawsuit, which challenges the use of copyrighted material in training generative AI systems.
The brief states that Meta copied and distributed substantial volumes of copyrighted content obtained from websites known for copyright infringement, including Z-Library, Libgen, and Sci-Hub. These sites have been the subject of legal actions and investigations due to unauthorized distribution of protected works.
According to STM, the use of such sources without licensing poses a risk to the rights of content creators and publishers and threatens the viability of scholarly publishing. The organization maintains that the development of AI systems should be conducted through lawful and rights-based frameworks that respect intellectual property protections.
