The College of Optometrists has selected Springer Nature as the new publishing partner for its flagship journal, Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics (OPO), effective January 2026. The transition marks the journal’s centenary year and aligns with Springer Nature’s 10th anniversary, extending a publishing legacy that incorporates over 180 years of historical brands.
OPO, an internationally recognized journal in vision science and optometry, will join Springer Nature’s medical portfolio, which includes approximately 3,000 journals. The publisher is currently ranked first by the number of journals among the top 50 titles by impact factor.
The agreement reflects a shared focus on advancing evidence-based research and improving dissemination of findings relevant to clinicians, researchers, and policymakers in optometry. Under this new arrangement, the journal will continue its schedule of seven issues per year, beginning with the inaugural Springer Nature issue in January 2026.
The College of Optometrists stated that the partnership underscores its commitment to clinical and academic excellence in the field. OPO, which originated as the British Journal of Physiological Optics, serves a global readership of over 400,000 and remains a primary platform for publishing research that supports clinical practice in optometry.
