ASCO and Google Cloud launch AI tool for faster access to oncology guidelines -

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and Google Cloud have announced the launch of the ASCO Guidelines Assistant, an artificial intelligence–powered tool designed to streamline clinician access to ASCO’s full library of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Built using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform and Gemini models, the new assistant allows oncology professionals to retrieve guideline recommendations more quickly and interactively.

The tool aims to address growing challenges in oncology care, including increasing cancer incidence among younger populations, a rising number of older cancer survivors, and expanding treatment options. These factors coincide with projected oncologist shortages, especially in community and rural settings, where clinicians manage higher patient loads across a broad spectrum of cancer types.

By drawing exclusively from ASCO’s published guidelines, the assistant provides clinicians with a trusted resource that avoids the risks associated with non-specialized or general-purpose AI tools. It supports real-time interaction, enabling users to ask follow-up questions and integrate expert recommendations directly into their patient care plans.

The Guidelines Assistant emphasizes transparency and accuracy. Each response includes source citations, and users can offer feedback to improve the tool’s performance. The system is now available to all ASCO members through the organization’s website.

ASCO stated that the tool enhances oncology decision-making by providing immediate access to reliable clinical guidance. Google Cloud characterized the collaboration as a strategic step toward supporting global cancer care by applying generative AI to reduce information overload and improve clinical workflows.

The initiative forms part of ASCO’s broader efforts to deploy AI responsibly in oncology practice and expand the reach of evidence-based care.
