A new five-year agreement between the Australian Academy of Science and CSIRO extends a long-standing partnership to support the publication of CSIRO’s suite of scientific journals through to the end of 2029. These journals, managed by CSIRO Publishing—an editorially independent unit within CSIRO—publish over a thousand peer-reviewed articles each year, with an emphasis on research relevant to Australia and its surrounding region.
The agreement reaffirms the shared commitment of both organisations to uphold the quality and integrity of Australian scientific publishing while contributing to global scientific dialogue. It also reflects a mutual focus on key values including open science, diversity, inclusion, and best practices in peer review. Editorial oversight for the journals is provided by a Board of Standards, jointly chaired by CSIRO and the Academy.
Leaders from both organisations emphasized that the partnership plays a critical role in advancing Australia’s contribution to international science. The collaboration also supports efforts to address major societal, environmental, and industrial challenges through evidence-based research. As scientific publishing evolves—particularly with the integration of AI technologies—the partnership will facilitate active engagement with emerging issues and ensure that journal standards remain rigorous and adaptive.
The journals supported under this agreement cover a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines. These include research in agricultural science, plant biology, and zoology, as well as environmental chemistry, soil science, marine and freshwater studies, reproductive health, and biodiversity conservation. This portfolio includes titles such as Animal Production Science, Australian Journal of Botany, Australian Journal of Chemistry, etc.
In addition to these CSIRO-owned journals, CSIRO Publishing also manages titles on behalf of other scientific bodies, including the Academy’s own Historical Records of Australian Science. The agreement reinforces both organisations’ roles in maintaining a trusted archive of scientific literature and in supporting the dissemination of high-quality Australian research on the global stage.
