Clarivate and CAPES expand research partnership to broaden national access to academic and scientific resources -

Clarivate Plc, a global provider of research intelligence, and CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior) have renewed and expanded their long-standing partnership to enhance access to academic and life sciences information across Brazil. The new five-year agreement extends Clarivate’s data and insights to more than 400 institutions, representing a 57% increase in coverage compared to the previous agreement.

Since 2001, when the Web of Science was first integrated into the CAPES Portal, Clarivate has supported CAPES in its mission to advance postgraduate education, high-level training, and international scientific collaboration. Under the renewed agreement, CAPES will continue to provide access to research tools such as Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports, Cortellis Drug Discovery Intelligence, and Derwent Innovation Index.

This partnership aims to support researchers and professionals across disciplines — including scholars, policy advisors, biomedical scientists, and healthcare practitioners — by providing comprehensive data and insights. These resources enable evidence-based research, clinical decision-making, and policy development, while also contributing to educational initiatives and fostering research excellence throughout Brazil.

According to Clarivate’s Chief Executive Officer, Matti Shem Tov, the expanded agreement represents an example of strategic collaboration designed to accelerate research and innovation at the national level. He noted that Brazil’s progress in scientific excellence and international collaboration has been significant, and emphasized the importance of supporting researchers across the country with reliable data, insights, and technology throughout the research lifecycle.

Denise Pires de Carvalho, President of CAPES, highlighted that Brazil’s scientific output is expanding beyond major urban centers, with a focus on equitable distribution of resources to enhance productivity across all regions. She noted that this collaboration allows for better understanding of the scientific production profile of Brazilian institutions, facilitating more informed decisions that address regional disparities. Researchers in the North, Northeast, and Center-West regions often face challenges in accessing resources, and expanded access could help elevate the visibility and impact of their work.

The renewed agreement aims to democratize access to scientific information, supporting data-driven research excellence and policy development. With Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports, and Derwent Innovation Index, academic institutions and government agencies can analyze global research trends, assess publication impact, and monitor innovation pathways.

Additionally, the expanded availability of Cortellis Drug Discovery Intelligence provides Brazil’s life sciences community — including postgraduate students, faculty, and biomedical researchers — with comprehensive insights into disease biology, pharmacology, and drug development processes. The resource supports clinical research and decision-making in key areas of medical research.

This partnership aligns with CAPES’ efforts to reduce regional disparities and foster inclusive academic excellence, allowing institutions across Brazil — from urban universities to those in remote regions — to strengthen postgraduate programs, support innovation, and raise the international profile of Brazilian research.
