The Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and the Special Libraries Association (SLA) have announced that they have entered into formal negotiations to explore a potential merger. This development reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the future of the information professions and delivering expanded value to the members of both organizations.
The boards of directors of ASIS&T and SLA reached a unanimous decision to begin discussions aimed at creating a combined association that would serve a diverse, global membership of information professionals across academic, corporate, government, and nonprofit sectors. Both organizations recognize the evolving landscape of information science and specialized librarianship, and the opportunities that greater collaboration can offer their respective communities.
Ian Ruthven, President of ASIS&T, emphasized that both associations are united in their efforts to promote information access, support industry in the productive use of information, and work toward an informed society. He noted that these discussions are about determining how to best position their members, their profession, and their organizations for a dynamic and impactful future.
Hildy Dworkin, President of SLA, highlighted that ASIS&T and SLA have long shared complementary missions and values. She observed that entering into these negotiations allows for a thoughtful examination of how a unified association might provide enhanced resources, expanded networking opportunities, and a stronger collective voice for members worldwide.
As the merger plan takes shape, both associations remain committed to a transparent and inclusive process, ensuring that members are actively engaged in shaping the future organization. Key areas under consideration include member services, programming, advocacy initiatives, and the organizational identity of the unified association.
Both ASIS&T and SLA have assured members that they will remain fully operational and continue delivering their planned programs and services throughout the process. Further information will be shared with members as the merger plan develops, with opportunities for input and feedback at each stage.
