Gale, a division of Cengage Group has launched AI Leveler, a generative AI-powered tool designed to assist K-12 educators in personalizing reading materials for students. This tool, currently in beta testing, is accessible to educators in over 50 school districts across 21 states. It aims to enhance reading comprehension by allowing teachers to adjust the reading level of Gale’s instructional content to better meet individual student needs.

AI Leveler is integrated into Gale In Context: For Educators and is intended to help address disparities in reading proficiency, as indicated by the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress, which found that one in three American students fail to demonstrate basic reading skills appropriate for their age.

Unlike standalone AI tools that generate new instructional materials, AI Leveler works exclusively with existing, curated content from Gale. This approach ensures that educational materials remain aligned with high-quality standards and that content integrity is maintained. The tool provides educators with 12 different Lexile reading levels, enabling them to modify the complexity of texts and create differentiated versions of the same material to cater to varying student proficiency levels.

Additional features include editable results that allow educators to further tailor leveled content to meet specific classroom needs, including formatting and vocabulary adjustments. Each adapted resource is accompanied by a citation that transparently identifies AI-assisted modifications, reinforcing information literacy and academic integrity.

The tool also integrates with popular learning management systems, such as Google Classroom, Canvas, and Schoology, facilitating easy distribution and assignment of adapted content. In addition, AI Leveler supports improvements to Gale’s “Find Resources by Standard” feature, enhancing the alignment between content and educational standards.

AI Leveler is part of Cengage Group’s broader strategy to incorporate AI technologies into educational products to support personalized learning, improve student outcomes, and better connect education to career pathways. It complements other recent AI-enhanced initiatives, including the Student Assistant, Faculty Insight Dashboard, and Skills Navigator.
