LIBER forms taskforce to align AI strategy with research library needs -

LIBER has launched a dedicated taskforce to address emerging artificial intelligence (AI) developments across the research library sector. The initiative aims to reinforce LIBER’s strategic response to AI and equip librarians to take a prominent role in promoting AI literacy.

The LIBER AI Taskforce was formally launched at the 2025 LIBER Annual Conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, during a strategy session led by Vice-President Dr. Giannis Tsakonas. The taskforce was later presented by Sara Kjellberg, Director of Malmö University Library, and Chair of the LIBER AI taskforce. Its creation aligns with LIBER’s ongoing Strategy 2023–2027 and reflects a growing urgency to develop a coordinated agenda on AI’s role in libraries and higher education.

The taskforce seeks to promote informed and reflective use of AI while upholding the library community’s core values of transparency and reliability. Existing LIBER Working Groups have already explored AI from different disciplinary perspectives, including copyright, publishing, and research data management. For instance, earlier this year, the Copyright and Legal Matters Working Group hosted a webinar on the EU AI Act, using real-case examples to illustrate the legal implications of AI use in library settings. The new taskforce will bridge these efforts by providing a unified strategic framework.

The characteristics of this Taskforce are:

• To speak on AI and research libraries’ matters at the European and global levels.

• To collaborate with LIBER members and partnering organisations on AI and research libraries’ matters.

• To operate as an umbrella to connect existing activities on AI in LIBER Working Groups and implement additional tactical and operational activities.

This collaborative structure is intended to ensure continuity and cohesion as LIBER plans to embed AI into its next strategic cycle post-2027.

The next phase of the initiative will be led by Karin Rydving, Assistant Director at Oslo University Library and a member of the taskforce. Over the coming two years, the team will work with LIBER’s Steering Committees and the LIBER Quarterly to develop a detailed action plan.
