Wiley, a leading global publisher, is entering a strategic partnership with Anthropic aimed at accelerating the adoption of responsible AI across academic research. At the outset, Wiley will implement Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to integrate peer-reviewed content seamlessly into AI-powered tools across various platforms.
Starting with a pilot program, pending a final agreement, Wiley and Anthropic will work with university partners to streamline and enhance access to Wiley’s research content. A critical element of this collaboration involves developing standards that ensure AI-generated outputs integrate scientific journal content with proper author attribution and citations.
According to Wiley’s Senior Vice President of AI Growth, the goal is to embed high-quality, peer-reviewed content at the heart of AI-powered discovery. Using MCP, Wiley aims to set an industry standard for interoperability, making authoritative research discoverable in increasingly AI-driven environments.
This joint initiative aligns with Anthropic’s broader Claude for Education initiative, which supports teaching, learning, administration, and research in higher education. This collaboration reflects an effort to advance AI tools that support human learning, providing students with access to peer-reviewed content through Claude while promoting responsible citation standards and upholding academic integrity.
During the pilot phase, researchers and students at participating institutions will be able to access Wiley’s scientific journals directly within Claude, streamlining their research workflows.
This collaboration extends Wiley’s ongoing commitment to supporting emerging AI applications across disciplines such as life sciences, education, and earth science applications. Wiley also reaffirmed its adherence to principles—human oversight, transparency, fairness, and governance—as the foundation for its responsible AI strategy.
