Wiley, a global provider of content, data-driven insights, and knowledge services, has introduced new tools in its zyBooks college STEM courseware to improve learning outcomes, academic integrity, and instructional effectiveness. Four tools will be available to users this fall at no additional cost, three of which incorporate AI capabilities: zyLabs AI Hints, Generate with AI for zyLabs, and Student Behavior Insights, alongside a non-AI tool, zyBooks Assessments.
zyLabs AI Hints is an AI-powered tutoring feature that offers guidance to students encountering difficulties in zyBooks coding labs. It provides targeted hints rather than direct answers, enabling students to identify and correct their own errors. The feature supports an approach known as productive struggle, helping learners overcome obstacles to complete assignments. Instructors can choose to enable or disable the tool depending on course requirements. The system was piloted with the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University before its wider release.
Generate with AI for zyLabs is an AI-assisted authoring tool that allows instructors to create customized zyLabs assignments. This functionality enables adaptation of content to specific course objectives and student needs, streamlining the development process for computer science coursework.
zyBooks Assessments enables instructors to create tests within the zyBooks platform, integrating assessment with other course elements such as reading materials, interactive questions, assignments, labs, and homework. Test content can be imported from existing course materials, supporting alignment between instruction and evaluation.
Student Behavior Insights provides instructors with data to identify students who may require additional academic support or who may be using AI-generated content inappropriately. The tool enables review of individual student progress, detection of potential academic integrity concerns, and analysis of assignment completion patterns.
According to Wiley, the development of these tools follows a research-led approach to address specific instructional challenges and support student learning.
zyBooks, including zyLabs, are Wiley’s interactive online courseware solutions designed for STEM disciplines, incorporating animations, learning questions, auto-graded activities, and integrated practice environments for coding skills development.
