The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) have introduced the Futurescape Libraries AI Toolkit, a resource designed to help libraries prepare for the growing influence of artificial intelligence on their operations and workforce.
The toolkit, developed by Carnegie Mellon University’s Keith Webster with support from the US Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and CNI, provides strategies and structured activities to assist libraries in integrating AI into planning and policy development. It draws on AI scenarios created by ARL and CNI and incorporates insights from research library leaders gathered during a Strategic Implications forum in December 2024.
Organized into flexible modules, the free toolkit enables library leadership teams, staff, and stakeholders to explore future possibilities, test current strategies, identify opportunities and vulnerabilities, and build readiness for long-term change. Its design supports integration into operating plans, strategic reviews, and cross-institutional discussions.
The toolkit emphasizes scenario planning as a means to move libraries from reactive to proactive positions, equipping them to adapt to AI-driven transformations in the information services sector.
