American Physiological Society to take over Function journal publishing operations from Oxford University Press in 2026 -

The American Physiological Society (APS) has confirmed that it will take over full publishing operations for Function beginning with the 2026 publication year. The transition has marked the journal’s shift from its existing publishing arrangement with Oxford University Press to the American Physiological Society’s in-house Publications Division. APS has described the change as part of its strategy to strengthen Function’s position as a leading open-access journal in physiology and to enhance the experience for authors, reviewers, and readers.

Bringing the journal in-house is expected to align it more closely with APS’ mission and publishing standards. The journal will continue to focus on research that advances understanding of physiological mechanisms and informs health and disease.

Colette Bean, Chief Publishing Officer, APS, has acknowledged Oxford University Press’ contribution to establishing Function within the global research community and emphasized that the transition represents an important milestone for APS. The integration of Function into APS’ journal portfolio is intended to further the organization’s goals for innovative and high-impact physiological publishing.

APS has indicated that the transition will be seamless. Manuscript submissions will proceed without interruption, and Function will remain fully indexed, discoverable, and accessible.
