Cengage Group has announced an expanded collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deliver scalable AI solutions for education. It expanded its work with AWS to combine AWS AI technologies with the company’s learning design expertise to deliver trusted AI tools intended to improve learning outcomes, support educators, and prepare learners for the workforce at scale.
The announcement comes amid rapid adoption of AI in education, with recent Cengage Group research indicating that 62% of students already use AI for academics, most commonly to summarize complex concepts (67%) or create study materials (55%). While 37% use AI to shortcut assignments, more than half seek tools that promote deeper engagement, underscoring the need for AI that advances critical thinking toward outcomes rather than quick answers.
One of the company’s first outcome-focused solutions is the AI Leveler Tool, introduced in beta this past spring, which uses generative AI to let K–12 educators adjust and personalize the reading level of instructional content for individual students. The tool is being piloted across dozens of school districts, and early feedback from a teacher panel has been overwhelmingly positive: 94% rated the tool’s quality as good, 90% viewed it favorably compared with other solutions, and 100% indicated they would use it in their classrooms.
The Leveler was developed in close collaboration with the AWS Generative AI Innovation team, which partnered with Cengage Group to shape the concept, refine the model based on educator feedback, and ensure accuracy and scalability. Cengage Group has highlighted that combining AWS technologies with its learning design aims to enhance human creativity, broaden opportunity, and focus AI in classrooms on delivering outcomes rather than shortcuts, with early classroom deployment demonstrating how responsible, flexible, and scalable AI can support educators, increase learner engagement, and expand access.
Beyond the AI Leveler, the companies are broadening their collaboration through initiatives that apply generative AI to boost learner engagement, improve outcomes, and strengthen pathways between education and employment. These efforts are guided by three priorities: creating a large language model–agnostic open architecture so the best models can be adapted as the technology evolves; embedding responsible AI practices with strong content-safety guardrails to address privacy and security concerns of educators, institutions, students, and parents; and designing solutions that can scale quickly and reliably to reach millions of learners worldwide, ensuring wide accessibility.
AWS has reported that the expanded collaboration is intended to enhance engagement, accelerate outcomes, and create seamless pathways from education to employment for millions globally. The initiative builds on a longstanding relationship between the companies and follows Cengage Group’s recently announced expansion of AI-powered tools across its portfolio aimed at personalizing experiences and improving outcomes for millions of learners.
