Springer Nature and University of Tokyo to host SDGs Symposium 2026 on AI and sustainability -

Springer Nature and the University of Tokyo are jointly organizing the SDGs Symposium 2026, a hybrid event focused on the role of artificial intelligence in advancing sustainability. The symposium, titled ‘AI and Sustainability: Opportunities and Challenges for a Sustainable Future’, will take place on February 17, 2026, both in person and online.

The event is designed to explore how AI can contribute to sustainability efforts while also addressing the ethical, social, and environmental challenges associated with its use. Participants from a range of sectors will examine AI’s potential to support progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), alongside concerns such as energy and water consumption, governance risks, and the possibility of widening social inequalities.

The 2026 edition marks the seventh SDGs Symposium jointly organized by Springer Nature and the University of Tokyo. Previous symposiums have addressed topics including inequality, planetary health, and cities.

The program will include keynote lectures, plenary lectures, a panel discussion with all speakers, and a student poster session followed by a networking reception. Registration for the event is free and open to anyone interested in sustainability and AI research. A call for student posters is currently open, with submissions due by January 30, 2026.

The symposium will be held from 14:00 to 17:10 Japan Standard Time at the Ito International Research Center at the University of Tokyo, with online participation also available. The event will be conducted in English, with simultaneous interpretation provided in Japanese.
