Global medical publishing market to hit $12.6 billion by 2028 on AI and online content -

Simba Information has released its Global Medical Publishing 2024–2028 report, providing an analysis of a market projected to grow from $11.2 billion in 2023 to $12.6 billion by 2028. The report attributes this growth to expansion in online content, increased application of artificial intelligence, and the continued significance of medical journals.

Online content is identified as the fastest-growing segment, with a projected 5.5 percent compound annual growth rate reaching $3.6 billion by 2028. Journals remain the largest segment and are expected to generate $4.9 billion by the end of the forecast period.

The report states that AI is increasingly integrated into clinical decision-making and research integrity. Developments cited include Wolters Kluwer’s AI Labs supporting evidence-based content delivery through UpToDate, and Elsevier’s ClinicalKey AI, which uses natural language processing to deliver contextual clinical insights. AI tools such as Wiley’s Papermill Detection Service and Springer Nature’s SnappShot are described as mechanisms to detect fraudulent research in open access publishing.

The report identifies workforce shortages, particularly in nursing, as a market opportunity addressed through education and training platforms. Examples include Wolters Kluwer’s Lippincott Ready for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and simulation-based training tools designed to support clinical preparedness and reduce medical errors.

North America has remained the largest regional market, representing 47 percent of global revenue, supported by high healthcare spending and an established research and development infrastructure. The Asia-Pacific region has been identified as an emerging growth area due to increased healthcare investment and expanding medical professional populations.

The report examines strategies of major publishers, including Wolters Kluwer, Elsevier, and Springer Nature, reviewing innovation initiatives, market positioning, and mergers and acquisitions activity. It provides forecasts across journals, online content, books, abstracting and indexing services, and other medical publishing activities.

Simba Information has based its estimates on historical trends, economic forecasts, executive commentary, revenue guidance, competitor analysis, customer data, staffing data, industry surveys, and public filings, including Form 10-K reports. Estimates are designated as “E,” and projections as “P.”
