Clarivate Plc has released the 2026 edition of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), continuing its role as a publisher‑neutral framework for evaluating journal influence across the global research ecosystem. Now in its sixth decade, JCR provides metrics for 22,643 journals across 254 categories, reflecting the diversity of scholarly publishing worldwide.
The 2026 edition builds on recent enhancements aimed at improving consistency, transparency, and inclusivity in journal‑level metrics. Clarivate stated that the release underscores its commitment to supporting publishers, librarians, and researchers with trusted and context‑rich journal intelligence.
The new data, based on 2025 outputs, highlights several notable trends:
• Global participation: 521 journals received a Journal Impact Factor for the first time, representing 47 countries and regions. Of these, 58% are based outside the United States and Western Europe.
• Author geography: Mainland China and the United States remain the most represented, accounting for 48% of author affiliations.
• Global South growth: Representation from the Global South continues to expand, with Mainland China showing a 23% increase and India a 12% increase in author representation between 2023 and 2025. Overall, Global South author affiliations rose 6% from 2024 and 10% from 2023.
To encourage responsible use of journal metrics, JCR includes complementary indicators beyond the Journal Impact Factor, such as the Journal Citation Indicator (JCI), descriptive data, and category‑level benchmarks. These indicators are designed to support journal evaluation rather than assess the performance of individual researchers or articles.
Clarivate emphasized that consistency remains a defining strength of JCR. Stable methodology and dependable year‑on‑year data provide a foundation for evaluating journal performance, supporting collection and funding decisions, and interpreting disciplinary trends over time.
