The American Library Association (ALA) has released a Special Report titled Creating Generative AI Policies: A Guide for Public and Academic Libraries, published by ALA Editions. The report addresses the challenges of developing policies for a rapidly evolving technology while emphasizing the urgency of establishing clear guidelines.
The publication notes that libraries face both opportunities and risks in adopting AI. It highlights the role of libraries in helping patrons build digital literacy skills, including a basic understanding of AI, while also stressing the importance of staff‑side policies to address privacy, security, and ethical concerns.
Authored by technology consultant Robin Hastings, the report surveys early efforts by libraries across the United States, as well as policies developed by cities and similar institutions, to provide stakeholders with practical approaches for shaping their own strategies. Hastings outlines:
• Overview of AI: A brief history, technical background, and arguments for and against adoption.
• Staff and patron use: Guidance on identifying how AI is encountered in daily work and patron interactions.
• Policy focus: Separate chapters on staff‑side and public‑facing policies, covering training, privacy, security, AI literacy, and boundaries for patron use.
• Clarity and flexibility: Recommendations for policies that are easy to follow and adaptable as technology evolves.
• Additional resources: Links to sample documents and curated reading lists.
Hastings, a consultant for the Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS), provides technology and service support to more than 40 libraries in the region and manages statewide services in Kansas. She has presented internationally on topics including cloud computing, project management, and disaster planning, and is the author of five books on library and technology subjects.
ALA Editions publishes resources for library professionals, scholars, students, and educators, supporting best practices, pedagogy, leadership, and advocacy. Purchases from the ALA Store help fund programs that advance awareness, accreditation, and professional development in the field.
