The American Medical Association (AMA) has introduced the Ethical AI Use in Medicine Series, a continuing medical education (CME) program designed to help physicians safely, effectively, and ethically integrate augmented and artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical practice.

The series was jointly developed by the AMA, the Duke Institute for Health Innovation, and the Health AI Partnership. It addresses the growing need for practical ethics guidance as AI adoption expands across health care. The curriculum translates ethical principles into practical tools and case‑based scenarios that support clinical decision-making while reinforcing patient trust and confidence in the medical profession.

AMA President Willie Underwood III, stated that the initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to equipping physicians with clear ethics guidance rooted in the AMA Code of Medical Ethics. He explained that the program translates ethical principles into actionable steps to ensure responsible use of AI tools, with patient trust and safety as central priorities.

The series is available exclusively through AMA Ed Hub™, the association’s online platform for CME and professional development. It includes four modules:

• A clinical practice toolkit offering a framework to evaluate, implement, and monitor AI tools.

• A decision‑making module that engages learners in realistic scenarios to strengthen judgment and accountability.

• A structured simulator focused on ethical use of AI mortality prediction models, including risk communication and bias awareness.

• A structured simulator for ambient AI scribe applications, emphasizing transparency, patient trust, physician verification, and safe documentation practices.

Dennis O’Brien, Vice President of Communications and Partnerships at JMIR Publications, noted that the program provides clinically relevant education that supports responsible AI use, reinforces physician judgment, and upholds patient trust while advancing high‑quality care.
