Springer Nature has introduced updated editorial policies and guidance on artificial intelligence (AI) to support responsible and transparent use across the research publishing lifecycle. The new framework provides practical direction for authors, reviewers, and editors as AI becomes increasingly embedded in scholarly workflows.
More than 70% of researchers report that publisher guidance on AI is becoming more important. In response, the framework builds on Springer Nature’s principles of accountability, transparency, human oversight, and confidentiality in editorial assessment. It outlines shared principles supported by tailored guidance to help different groups apply them in daily research and editorial activities.
The policies emphasize not only whether AI has been used, but also how it has been applied, the potential impact, the level of risk introduced, and whether appropriate human oversight has been maintained. The framework distinguishes between lower‑risk uses, such as improving language, cleaning data, or structuring comments, and higher‑risk uses, such as suggesting methods, identifying patterns, or interpreting results. Activities that replace accountable human judgment or compromise publishing integrity—such as generating conclusions or delegating peer review to AI—remain prohibited.
The framework also highlights the importance of disclosure. By requiring declarations of AI use, the policies aim to support transparency and informed assessment, while acknowledging that responsible AI‑assisted activities are now routine in scholarly communication.
