CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, has announced a collaboration with Novartis Biomedical Research to improve accessibility of reaction data and support AI-enabled research. The partnership will combine CAS’s expertise in scientific data curation with advanced technology to provide Novartis researchers integrated access to proprietary experimental reaction data alongside more than 160 million curated reactions from the CAS Content Collection™.
Reaction data in scientific research is often dispersed across electronic lab notebooks, reports, shared drives, and partner platforms. Consolidating this information can help researchers more efficiently discover, access, and analyze data across the enterprise. Central to the collaboration is the use of CAS data transformation services, delivered through the CAS Intelligence HubSM, to organize and standardize Novartis’ extensive experimental reaction data. This process is intended to make the data more accessible for computational research, machine learning, and AI applications.
Tim Wahlberg, Interim President of CAS, stated that the collaboration highlights the importance of strong scientific data infrastructure combined with domain-specific expertise to support evolving drug discovery workflows. He noted that extending the relationship with Novartis will help make reaction data more accessible and valuable as an AI-ready resource.
As part of the initiative, CAS and Novartis will also develop a customized discovery platform based on the CAS SciFinder® architecture. The platform will allow Novartis researchers to search, analyze, and cross-reference enriched internal reaction data alongside CAS data. By addressing the challenge of searching internal and external data together, the collaboration also establishes a foundation for future CAS platform capabilities, including large language models and agentic AI.
