Elsevier pledges AI tools, research funding and training to European Science initiative -

Elsevier has pledged to support the European Commission’s AI in Science Enablers Initiative through complimentary access to artificial intelligence (AI) tools, research collaborations, and training programs for researchers and healthcare professionals across Europe.

The commitment was announced at the AI in Science Summit in Dublin, which brought together more than 1,000 participants from the research, technology, business, and policy sectors to launch the Commission’s initiative to mobilize private-sector and philanthropic support for European science.

As part of the pledge, Elsevier will provide 4,000 complimentary licenses for its AI-powered research and clinical tools to European researchers, healthcare professionals, and students. The allocation includes 1,000 LeapSpace licenses for early-career and senior researchers, 1,000 ClinicalKey AI licenses, 1,000 ClinicalKey Nursing AI licenses, and 1,000 Complete Anatomy licenses.

LeapSpace is an AI workspace designed to support complex research tasks across workflows. ClinicalKey AI provides evidence-based clinical decision support through electronic health record (EHR) and application programming interface (API) integrations. ClinicalKey Nursing AI is designed to support nurses in clinical decision-making and professional development, while Complete Anatomy is a 3D anatomy platform.

The commitment also includes an estimated €1 million annually in in-kind support and funding to strengthen Europe's AI research capabilities and promote responsible AI-enabled research. Elsevier plans to establish at least three new collaborations each year with European research institutions, drawing on its data science, ethics, and software development expertise, as well as its content resources and knowledge discovery tools.

The company will also participate in the Horizon-funded AIRIS project, which focuses on AI-enabled hypothesis generation in biomedicine. In addition, Elsevier plans to establish a Centre on Hybrid Intelligence for Trustworthy Research in partnership with the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

As part of its training commitments, Elsevier expects to support approximately 10 PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and master's students annually through AI-focused training and career development programs.

Elsevier will continue working with the European Commission to finalize the details of its commitment, including the scope of a proposed Europe-wide LeapSpace Challenge. Applications for complimentary access to the company's AI-powered research and clinical tools are available through the AI in Science Enablers Initiative portal.
