PLOS and Janeway collaborate on shared infrastructure for scholarly publishing -

PLOS and Janeway have entered a collaboration to develop and extend Janeway’s open-source codebase for use in parts of PLOS’s article submission process. As part of the initiative, PLOS will contribute engineering resources, code, and technical ideas to the shared codebase, supporting the development of publishing infrastructure for both organizations and the wider scholarly publishing community.

The collaboration aligns with PLOS’s efforts to develop and contribute to shared, open infrastructure within the open science ecosystem. It also reflects Janeway’s open-source development model, which encourages collaborative development and the reuse of software components across scholarly publishing organizations.

By contributing to shared tools and infrastructure, PLOS aims to reduce duplication and fragmentation across scholarly publishing systems and support the development of resources that other organizations can adapt and build upon.

Andy Byers, Director of publishing technology at Janeway, noted that the collaboration reflects the platform’s commitment to open, shared infrastructure. He explained that PLOS’s engineering contributions and technical input would support the continued development of the codebase and provide potential benefits to other publishers and journals using Janeway.

Tom Scott, Chief Digital Officer at PLOS, emphasized the importance of community-developed infrastructure to the future of scholarly publishing. He described Janeway as part of this ecosystem and highlighted the collaboration as an opportunity to contribute to the platform’s ongoing development as an open-source solution.
