CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, has made CAS Connections available in Microsoft Copilot, enabling users to access the CAS Content Collection and CAS Newton, an artificial intelligence (AI) platform designed for scientific applications. Developed in collaboration with Microsoft, the connector is intended for organizations in the pharmaceutical, life sciences, and chemical industries.
Research and development teams in these sectors rely on specialized scientific information to support their work. CAS Connections integrates CAS-curated scientific knowledge, accumulated over more than 150 years, and the conversational capabilities of CAS Newton into Microsoft Copilot. The integration allows researchers to access scientific information within their existing workflows for writing, analysis, and collaboration.
Tim Wahlberg, interim President of CAS, explained that scientists working in drug discovery and chemical research and development depend on CAS for information about substances, reactions, and biological targets. The collaboration with Microsoft brings these resources and capabilities into Copilot to support research from early-stage concepts to the development of medicines and materials.
The connector supports several research and business workflows. For example, chemists working in Microsoft Word can verify a compound's CAS Registry Number® and structure, review reaction conditions and reagent availability against CAS records, and reference sources while preparing experimental reports. Intellectual property analysts using Microsoft Teams can investigate whether a substance appears in patent literature, while business development teams preparing licensing briefings in Microsoft PowerPoint can incorporate patent landscape information derived from CAS content.
Chantrelle Nielsen, principal product manager for the Microsoft Copilot platform, noted that pharmaceutical, life sciences, and chemical organizations require AI systems grounded in reliable scientific information. The integration adds CAS resources to the Microsoft Copilot connector ecosystem, allowing scientists, patent specialists, and business analysts to access this information within the platform.
CAS Connections also supports the integration of CAS content and CAS Newton with other research and enterprise tools, including electronic laboratory notebooks, laboratory information management systems, scientific discovery platforms, and enterprise AI applications. CAS introduced the platform with several initial collaborators in June 2026.
The CAS-Microsoft Copilot connector is available through the Microsoft Marketplace.
