The RAISE Observatory, a research discovery and analytics platform developed through the SCIANCE project and powered by the OpenAIRE Graph, has launched to help researchers, institutions, and policymakers examine how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used in scientific research across Europe. The platform brings together research outputs, organizational information, and analytical tools to provide insights into AI adoption across scientific disciplines, with international data offering broader context.
The Observatory is part of the digital ecosystem of RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe), a European Commission initiative designed to connect computational resources, data, research talent, and funding through a virtual research institute. Introduced through the European Strategy for AI in Science, RAISE aims to strengthen research on AI and the application of AI across scientific fields.
The SCIANCE project supports the development of RAISE through collaboration among scientific organizations, AI research centers, and research infrastructures. Its activities include identifying research and innovation priorities and piloting the structure of the RAISE Secretariat for AI in science. The Observatory contributes by making information about research activity and the organizations involved more accessible.
The RAISE digital ecosystem includes three complementary components. The RAISE Hub provides access to information and resources, the RAISE Forum facilitates community engagement, and the RAISE Observatory offers research evidence for discovery and strategic analysis.
The platform is built on the OpenAIRE Graph, an open scholarly knowledge graph that connects publications, datasets, software, and other research outputs with projects, organizations, and funding information. These connections provide a broader view of research activity beyond individual publications. The Observatory also incorporates an inference system developed by OPIX to help identify and classify AI-related research and present the information through analytical views.
Users can explore AI applications across scientific fields, including astronomy and fundamental physics, materials science, Earth sciences, life sciences, and social sciences. The platform organizes AI technologies into families and classes, allowing users to examine their use across different research domains.
The Observatory also covers AI applications across research workflows, including literature searches, data preparation, laboratory processes, drafting, peer review, and reproducibility. Users can compare patterns of AI adoption by research field, country, and time period, as well as examine the organizations associated with recorded research activity.
A searchable directory of projects, organizations, data sources, and research communities provides additional information about the broader AI research ecosystem. Filtering options and grid and map views allow users to identify relevant initiatives. The platform also provides access to its methodology, classifications, definitions, and limitations to help users interpret the indicators.
These features are intended to support researchers seeking relevant approaches and potential collaborators, as well as university research offices assessing training requirements, partnerships, and institutional support for AI-enabled research. Funders and policymakers can use the available evidence to examine the distribution of research activity, identify areas for further investigation, and inform discussions about research priorities.
The RAISE Observatory aims to support evidence-based analysis of AI in science by making research information and its underlying methodology accessible. Its indicators are intended to complement disciplinary expertise and community perspectives rather than serve as standalone measures of research activity.
Users can explore the Observatory through its online platform, access resources through the RAISE Hub, and participate in discussions through the RAISE Forum.
