Springer Nature and Google DeepMind develop AI assistant for peer review -

Springer Nature and Google DeepMind have entered into a research partnership to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant designed to support peer reviewers in evaluating scientific manuscripts. The initiative aims to help reviewers navigate papers, analyze text and figures, and identify areas requiring closer examination while retaining human scientific judgment as central to the peer review process.

Peer review plays a key role in maintaining the quality and integrity of published research. As research output and manuscript complexity increase, the partnership will explore how AI can help reviewers manage their workloads and focus on issues that require specialized scientific expertise.

The collaboration combines Springer Nature’s experience in scholarly publishing and peer review management with Google DeepMind’s Gemini models. It also draws on Google’s work on AI-based research tools, including ScholarPeer and Deep Review, which are designed to support the analysis of scholarly and technical documents.

The prototype assistant is currently being tested. It is intended to provide an interactive review experience that helps researchers examine large volumes of text, charts, and figures. The system is being developed to support scientific experts rather than replace their judgment. The initiative forms part of Springer Nature’s efforts to improve the publishing process for authors and reviewers, including through its in-house platform, Snapp.

The assistant is built using Google’s open-source Agent Development Kit (ADK) and runs exclusively within Springer Nature’s private Gemini Enterprise environment. According to the companies, content used to develop and test the system remains within Springer Nature’s secure environment to maintain the confidentiality of authors and reviewers.

The project is part of Springer Nature’s broader approach to responsible AI adoption in research and publishing, which places human expertise at the center of decision-making. The organizations plan to provide further updates as testing and development progress.

Springer Nature’s guidance on AI use for authors, editors, and the research community is available on its official AI information page.
